Game recap: Yankees at White Sox 6/6/07

Chien-Ming Wang (5-4) showed why he is the Yankees ace. The right-hander threw a complete game Wednesday night against the White Sox, as the Yankees won 5-1.

Wang was given a four-run lead in the top of the fourth, following a Johnny Damon RBI double, Alex Rodriguez two RBI single, and a Hideki Matsui sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the fourth, Wang gave up a run on a Juan Uribe groundout. However, that was the only run the White Sox were able to push across.

Wang threw 104 pitches, only giving up five hits while striking out four. 15 of his outs went for grounders, which is his specialty.

Bobby Abreu also contributed to the offense. He hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth, showing further signs that he is coming out of his early-season funk. This was his first home run since May 16, and only his second since April 9.

Miguel Cairo is taking advantage now that Doug Mientkiewicz is on the disabled list and Josh Phelps is not a great fielder. In his second consecutive start, he got another two hits, scored a run, and stole two bases.

This was also the second straight game the Yankees got ten or more hits, showing that the offense is finally coming together.

The Yankees improve to 26-31 on the season. Mike Mussina will take the mound against Yankee-reject Jose Contreras tomorrow night.

Before the game, Jason Giambi was involved in more controversy without even playing. He received news that commissioner Bud Selig wants Giambi to fully cooperative with George Mitchell, the former U.S. Senator heading the steroid investigation. Most of Giambi's Yankee teammates think this situation is ridiculous and that he shouldn't be punished for speaking his mind.

Pitcher Roger Clemens also threw batting practice down in Tampa, Fla. today and is scheduled to make his 2007 debut Saturday afternoon against Pittsburgh barring any setbacks.
