Game 98 notes: Yankees win 21-4

Wow, happy birthday to me indeed. The Yankees, knowing that it was my 19th birthday, pounded out 25 hits and scored 21 runs to beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to win another four-game series.

Shelley Duncan hit two home runs and Alex Rodriguez hit his 34th home run of the season, as the Yankees hit six home runs overall. Hideki Matsui added five hits as well.

The Yankees' pitchers pitched well overall. Andy Pettitte (6-6) gave up three runs over six innings and struck out eight. Sean Henn and Mike Myers pitched the final three innings and only gave up one unearned run overall.

James Shields (8-6) was terrible for Tampa Bay. In 3 1-3 innings, he gave up 10 hits and 10 earned runs. Casey Fossum, Shawn Camp and Scott Dohmann didn't fare much better. They gave up three, five and three earned runs, respectively.

Some notes from the game:

  • For the second game in a row, all the Yankees' starters had at least one hit. Also, all of the starters had at least one RBI.
  • Duncan now has three home runs in 12 career at-bats. He also has seven RBIs.
  • Rodriguez's home run was his 498th of his career. His three RBIs give him 99 on the season in only 98 games played.
  • Matsui has nine home runs in the month of July.
  • Johnny Damon didn't start, but went 1-2 with a double and an RBI. He also played right field when he pinch-hit for Bobby Abreu.
  • The Yankees scored 10 runs in the fourth inning.
  • After scoring four runs in the first game of this series, the Yankees scored 45 runs in the final three games.
