Game 93 notes: Yankees win 6-1

Roger Clemens went six innings and only gave up one run. It then took five relievers to get nine outs, including five for Mariano Rivera with a day game tomorrow afternoon. However, a win is a win, and a huge win at that. The Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians both lost today. As a result, the Yankees are now only seven games behind the Red Sox in the AL East race (six games in the loss column) and six games behind the Indians in the Wild Card race (five games in the loss column).

With this win, the Yankees have won five straight games. They have also won 11 of their last 14 games.

Some notes from the game:

  • Hideki Matsui went 2-4, extending his hitting streak to 13 games. He has gotten two hits in each of the last five games and is now batting .286.
  • Melky Cabrera's hitting streak was snapped at 13 games with his 0-3 night.
  • Alex Rodriguez gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead with a two-RBI double in the seventh. He has 92 RBIs this season.
  • Robinson Cano went 2-3. He has two hits in each of the last three games.
  • Johnny Damon went 0-3. He is 0 for his last 14 and is batting a dismal .236.
  • Andy Phillips added two more RBIs tonight. He now has six RBIs since July 15.
  • Ron Villone was awarded a hold for retiring no batters. He walked the only batter he faced. They need to get rid of this stat, or, at the very least, modify it.
  • Edwar Ramirez is still in the witness protection program.
