Ponson in Scranton

Sidney Ponson started for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tonight.

Facing the high-powered offense of the Toledo Mud Hens, he turned in this line: 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K. He also threw 78 pitches for 46 strikes.

Not great, but not awful either.

Ponson was awful in Minnesota. I think I almost threw up in my mouth when I said his name...:D

Seriously, though, good luck with him. He is a handful, lol.

Random, useless note: I feel like a father dropping his hyper, obnoxious kid off at preschool. Good luck with him, lol. I'm sure you'll have loads of fun. :D

Hah, the Yankees had him for a little bit in 2006, so we had an inkling of what to expect.

Thanks for the advice :P

Ponson had minor arm/elbow surgery in late 2006, said he got released by the Yankees at the right time, he couldn't open a door due to the pain. The Twins gave him 7 (wow, SEVEN!) starts, and the defense was bad behind him (very bad-see Jason Kubel play OF someday, he ruined Ponson's first start...hmm, against the YANKEES, odd!) He had a worse stretch in 2004 in Baltimore, and even worse in 2005 (when alcohol consumption seemed to have taken over as top priority and his arm hurt but he self-medicated... and we all know how well 2005 ended for him.) I feel in 2007 he wasn't quite ready at the season's start, maybe due to throwing earlier than ever (after surgery-well, he said he felt great right after, and did he have a team medical guy to ask?) Anyway, he seems to have better pitches in 2008, and if he can avoid drinking (I sure hope Cashman convinced him he'd better not do that!) he may have a decent year, in AAA, MLB, AAA again, and if the Yanks don't call him up, and he behaves, another team should take a chance, so it should be MLB again in 08...don't laugh or cringe, when did Sidney have good arm health AND sobriety? Ever before? I doubt it-he may have been sober in St Louis & NY, but he admitted he drank wine in spring 2007, and with the Rangers...like I said, I hope he isn't drinking, at all, that's safest. And he may be a "handful" but he's emotional, opinionated and immature, but not the insane Ozzie Guillen/Tony Stewart type the Rangers described recently. He is an alcoholic, and he needs to admit that and stop letting booze make him seem a pathetic pitcher and stupid human being. Ask most ex-teammates about him, ask fans who have interacted with him...he's a bit different, but a decent guy. He needs a designated drinker to get wasted for him.
