Sir Sid escapes again

Sir Sidney Ponson's line against the Minnesota Twins tonight:

5.2 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

It amazes me how he continues to do this. In four starts as a Yankee this season, he has given up 28 hits and 11 walks in 22 2/3, yet the Yankees have won his first three starts and are in position to win again tonight.

It's not pretty - and the Yankees are scoring a ton of runs for him - so I'm still never too confident when he takes the hill. One day he'll run into a team of patient hitters who will take pitches and hit in the clutch. Until then, I'll obviously take all the wins we can get out of him.

I find it amazing that Ponson is doing this well, too. He has one or two good pitches; a changeup and maybe his slider. The other two, fastball, curve, and slider, are pretty bad, at least based on the way opponents are hitting them.

Opponents are batting .333 against Ponson's fastball, .409 against his curve, .200 against his slider, and .125 against his changeup.

And he's not overpowering anyone, either. Only 8% of his strikes are swing and misses. The major league average is 14%.

I just don't get how he's doing so well. He must be receiving spectacular run support.
