Get ready for five years of A.J. Burnett, Yankees fans.
According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, Burnett and the Yankees have reached a preliminary agreement on a five-year, $82.5 million deal. That works out to an average of $16.5 million per season, but the two sides are still negotiating contract terms.
Burnett, 31, went 18-10 with a 4.07 ERA in a career-high 221 1/3 innings last year. His 231 strikeouts led the American League.
This obviously isn't a shock by any means, but I'm still not thrilled. It's too much money for too long for someone who's too much of an injury risk. Hopefully he's not on the disabled list for the majority of the contract like I think he could be.
And once again, the Yankees signed someone who I've preemptively made a hat for.

Whats the over/under on innings pitched by Phil Hughes for the big league club this season? My guess is around 115..
Hughes could very well be the fifth starter if they choose not to sign Pettitte.
I wish teams could have a reverse opt-out clause in case something doesn't work out. Burnett is either going to be a much needed bolster with C.C. in the rotation, or he's going to be the second coming of Pavano.
I'll reserve any further judgment until the season rolls along. A full season with little or no injury will be most welcome!
That's a good idea, Kongon. That would've saved us from the disasters that were Jaret Wright and Carl Pavano.
On paper the rotation looks great. Hopefully we can get the most out of A.J.
