The forecast isn't looking good. As of press time, the game is still on.

Rodriguez set to return Tuesday

According to the AP, Alex Rodriguez said his right quad felt fine this morning after running the bases yesterday afternoon.

He will play in three extended spring training games starting tomorrow before returning to the team on Tuesday. The Yankees will be at home against Baltimore.

To say the Yankees are desperately missing Rodriguez would be an understatement. They're coming off a four-game series where they only scored six total runs.

Some news

Joe Girardi has been named to Terry Francona's coaching staff for the All-Star game to be held at Yankee Stadium. He will be joined by Detroit Tigers' manager Jim Leyland as well as the rest of the Red Sox's coaching staff.

Meanwhile, Jason Giambi passes around a thong to those who are in slumps. I hope he has nine of those, because the whole team should be wearing one.

This was in the paper and the blogs yesterday, but a student at NYU's graduation at Yankee Stadium tried to steal home. He was stopped by security guards, unfortunately..

The series ahead

The New York Yankees (20-22) begin a three-game series against the New York Mets (20-19) at Yankee Stadium tonight. The pitching matchups are:

Tonight - 7:05 p.m., MY9
Johan Santana
- LHP (4-2, 3.10 ERA) vs. Darrell Rasner - RHP (2-0, 3.00 ERA)

Tomorrow - 1:05 p.m., YES

Pregame concerns: Interesting lineup for the Yankees. I'd be shocked if they score three or more runs.

Igawa optioned

With Ian Kennedy being called up to start this afternoon's game, Kei Igawa has been optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre.

Igawa was terrible in his start Friday night in Detroit, giving up six earned runs in three innings in the Yankees' 6-5 loss.

In 70 2-3 Major League innings, he has a 6.75 ERA.

You have to think he won't be back until September. If there is another injury in the starting rotation, I feel the Yankees would try someone else before going back to Igawa.

Cano hits in front of Cabrera, goes 4-4

As we all know, Robinson Cano has had a dismal start to the season. Before last night's game, he had a .183 batting average in 142 at-bats.

Since Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada have been out, the bottom of the lineup is not providing much protection. Cano has had to hit in front of Alberto Gonzalez, Morgan Ensberg and Jose Molina.

While Gonzalez is batting .290, the sample size is rather small, and pitchers would easily rather face him than face Cano. Ensberg is batting .224 with a .268 OBP. Molina has also been awful. Since April 13, Molina is batting .071 (3-42) with one RBI.

Obviously, whoever is batting eighth is not providing much protection for the seven-place hitter (usually Cano).

This was until last night when Joe Girardi put Cano in the six-hole and dropped Melky Cabrera to seventh. Cabrera has developed more power this year, slugging six home runs and driving in 18.

While Cano has been showing improvement - 9-29 with two home runs and four RBI between May 4 and May 13 - he was still below the Mendoza Line.

However, last night Cano's bat showed up. He went 4-4 with an RBI while hitting in front of Cabrera, propelling his average to .205. Cabrera had the misfortune of hitting in front of Ensberg, and went 0-4 as a result. He has been a slide of his own lately, going five for his last 31 with one RBI.

Hopefully this seemingly minor lineup adjustment will jump-start Cano. With Rodriguez and Posada remaining out of the lineup, any help they can get is huge.

Moose on fire

Who would've thought that Mike Mussina would hold a share of the American League lead in wins at this stage in the season? Not I, certainly.

After winning his fifth-straight start, Mussina is now in a seven-way tie for the league-lead in wins with six. Teammate Chien-Ming Wang is also among those seven.

In these five starts, Mussina has a 2.76 ERA (nine earned runs in 29 1-3 innings). He has also only given up 27 hits while striking out 17 and walking three over that time.

While the offense has been a disappointment through the first 41 games, Mussina has been a pleasant surprise. He has seemed to reinvent himself, and as long as he stays away from Manny Ramirez, it could be smooth sailing for the foreseeable future.

Game 41: Yankees win 2-1

A closed-door meeting didn't exactly cause an offensive explosion Wednesday night, but it inspired the Yankees just enough to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 at Tropicana Field. This was the Rays' first home loss since April 15.

As the score says, the game was a pitcher's duel between Mike Mussina and James Shields.

Mussina (6-3) won his fifth consecutive start, going 6 1-3 innings, allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out four and walking one. He threw 87 pitches.

Shields (4-3) was almost as good. He struck out six and walked two in 7 1-3 innings, but also gave up two earned runs and six hits.

Before the game, the Yankees were batting .219 with runners in scoring position and two out. However, both of their runs were scored in that exact situation.

In the fourth inning, Hideki Matsui doubled with two outs. The next batter, Robinson Cano, drove him home with a single. Cano went 4-4 to raise his batting average to .205.

In the fifth inning, Morgan Ensberg led off with a single. He reached second on a Jose Molina sacrifice bunt and eventually scored on Bobby Abreu's bloop double after Johnny Damon struck out swinging.

With the way Mussina was pitching, this was enough. Manager Joe Girardi tried to stretch him out in the seventh, but after walking a batter with out, Mussina was removed and replaced by Ross Ohlendorf.

He gave up two-straight singles to score one run. Things could have been much worse, but Ohlendorf got Gabe Gross to line into a double play to end the Rays' threat.

Joba Chamberlain pitched a scoreless eighth inning. He struck out the side and walked one batter. Mariano Rivera recorded his 10th save of the season by pitching a 1-2-3 ninth. He received the loss in last night's game, but rebounded quickly tonight.

The Yankees improve to 20-21 on the season and will look to split the four-game series tomorrow night. Ian Kennedy returns from his short stint in the minors to start for New York. Scott Kazmir, fresh off contract extension, will counter for Tampa Bay. Game time is slated for 4:10 p.m.

Hank speaks, and I don't really care

Mt. Hank Steinbrenner blew following last night's rough loss to the first-place (!) Tampa Bay Rays last night.

Kevin Kernan of the Post had all of the quotes.

Let's try to tackle this piece-by-piece.

"We've got to forget about all the injuries and start playing our butts off," Steinbrenner told The Post. The Yankees were buried by the Rays on Monday. These are difficult days for Joe Girardi's club.

"The bottom line is that the team is not playing the way it is capable of playing," Steinbrenner said. "These players are being paid a lot of money and they had better decide for themselves to earn that money."

Well, with guys like Jose Molina, Morgan Ensberg and Alberto Gonzalez playing every night, I believe the team is playing the way it is capable of playing. There is a reason why they were expected to be role players and not everyday players. There is also a reason why Alex Rodriguez is being paid $275 million over 10 years and why Jorge Posada got a huge contract.

"We have good professional hitters and I have a lot of faith in them," Steinbrenner said from Tampa. As for the team in general, he noted, "I'm not saying they are not giving the effort, but they need to be playing harder."

Again, two of the best and professional hitters have been out since April. Also, Jason Giambi and Robinson Cano, while showing signs of coming out of their respective slumps, have been dreadful. I also don't doubt that the team is playing hard. They are failing in the clutch, but that is not because they don't care.

"There's no question we need to turn it around and we have the talent to turn it around. We've got the team in place, and now they just have to go out and do it.

"This is going to get turned around," Steinbrenner said. "If it's not turned around this year, then it will be turned around next year, by force if we have too."

This is my favorite part. I'd actually like to see him use force next year, because I'm curious as to what he means.

His next quote is about Joba Chamberlain, but that issue is so ridiculous that it doesn't need to be mentioned in this space.

"We'll add whoever we have to add," he said. "We're missing two big pieces, but this is basically the same lineup as last year. I have great faith in all of them."

Yes, it's the same lineup as last year when Posada and Rodriguez are playing. However, when Giambi is playing everyday and Cano is still inept, the lineup is much worse than it was last year. It's also a problem that this is the same lineup last year. At least last year they'd bully bad pitchers. So far this year, they can't hit anyone.

Regarding the Rays: "I'm happy for them, but I wish they were in the National League. They only had 13,000 there (Monday) night," Steinbrenner said. "That place should be packed. They're an exciting young team."

This I actually agree with. I know Florida Marlins' fans always jumped on the bandwagon, but the Rays have a legitimate good, young team that should be around for years.

Steinbrenner needs to just be quiet and let the players play. Does he really think speaking to some reporter from the Post will motivate the team? There is a reason why he was never involved with the team until this past off-season. They are only 40 games into the season and are remarkably only two games under .500. If things get much worse from here, then you can speak. Until then, just keep your mouth shut, please.

At least they showed comeback ability?

That's really all I can say after this game.

They were lucky it was only a one-run deficit in the ninth when Hideki Matsui came up against Rays' closer Troy Percival.

Like most of these games recently, the Yankees had their chances to score, but didn't.

It's a shame Chien-Ming Wang couldn't walk away with a victory, but at least he didn't get the loss. He wasn't perfect - seven hits and three walks in seven innings - but he held the Rays to one run and kept the struggling offense in the game.

Mariano Rivera tried to get through two innings, but eventually gave up the winning run in the 11th inning. Great time to give up the first earned run of the season, huh?

The Tampa Bay Rays are in first place (!) and are a franchise-record seven games above .500. I was expecting big things from them, but not this season. I realize it's still early, but what they've put together so far is pretty remarkable. The East isn't a walk in the park like it used to be.

Awful, terrible

If the top of the sixth inning wasn't a microcosm of the 2008 Yankees' season to date, I don't know what is.

Derek Jeter tripled with one out. Of course, he didn't score.

Bobby Abreu grounded out to short and Hideki Matsui popped out to short.

With Abreu, a lefty batter, you would think he'd be able to chop a ball to the right side of the infield to score Jeter. I mean, he seems to do that a lot anyway.

With a team struggling to score runs, they can't strand runners at third with less than two outs. Chien-Ming Wang is pitching fine. His only crime was giving up one earned run thus far. Too bad the Yankees have no runs.

  • Floyd: 1-3
  • Hinske: 12-27, 5 2B, 2 HR, 3 RBI
  • Navarro: 2-11
  • Bartlett: 0-4
Pregame concerns: Wang pitched six shutout innings against the Rays on April 6. He is 5-2 with a 4.11 ERA in seven career starts at Tropicana Field. ... Jackson is 1-1 against New York this season. He gave up one run over six innings in his April 5 victory. He gave up five earned runs over five innings in his April 15 loss.

A-Rod out longer

I saw this last night, but wasn't around long enough to post it. Good thing I missed the game too. This team is flat-out boring.

Alex Rodriguez is progressing slower than expected and will miss at least the rest of this week (including the always overblown Subway Series).

Rushing him back is the reason why his injury became more severe, so it's good to see that they are at least being more cautious this time around.

To say that the Yankees are desperately missing Rodriguez is an understatement. For every game that the lineup puts together games of six or more runs, they play three more games where they score three or less runs.

The Yankees are playing uninspired baseball at this point, and it's amazing that they are 19-20 through 39 games this season. The Yankees were 18-21 at this point in the season last year, but this was before a losing streak that found them sitting at 21-29 after 50 games. Keep in mind that Rodriguez was just coming off that crazy April where he won two games with his bat in the ninth inning.

All is obviously not lost. While the Red Sox are seven games above .500, they are only four games ahead of the Yankees in the AL East standings. As we learned last year, nothing is decided this early in the season. Rodriguez can sit out this week to recover, but he will start to be a concern if he's out any longer.

They can win with Rodriguez in the lineup while Jorge Posada is out. Jose Molina and Chad Moeller are fine once Rodriguez is back. However, while both Posada and Rodriguez are out with injuries, the lineup is anemic.

This season has given Yankee fans a glimpse at what life without Rodriguez would have been like if he didn't re-sign this off-season. Hopefully they will now appreciate Rodriguez and what he brings to this lineup.

Kennedy to start Thursday

Ian Kennedy will return to the Yankees to start on Thursday against Tampa Bay, according to George King.

Kennedy is scheduled to start tonight for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but will likely pitch only one inning.

In one start for Scranton, Kennedy pitched a one-hitter over 7 1-3 innings.

Because of this move, Darrell Rasner will start on Friday against the Mets. Kei Igawa will likely get optioned out come Thursday.

I think they're bringing back Kennedy way too soon. Yes, he had one great start in Triple-A. But that doesn't mean that all of his problems were solved. I think they're better off leaving him down for a couple of more starts, but it looks like the decision has already been made.

The series ahead

The New York Yankees (19-19) begin a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays (21-16) in St. Petersburg, Fla. tonight. The pitching matchups are:

Tonight - 7:10 p.m., YES

Tomorrow - 7:10 p.m., YES

Thursday - 4:10 p.m., YES

The rain out allowed the Yankees to skip Kei Igawa's scheduled Wednesday start. Darrell Rasner (2-0, 3.00 ERA) will start either on Thursday or Friday against the Mets.

A look at the standings

I delve into the standings after all of the relevant Sunday games have been completed to track the Yankees' progress over the week that just ended.
